Information Literacy.
According to Alexandria Proclamation on Information Literacy and Lifelong Learning. (2005) "Information literacy empowers people in all walks of life to seek, evaluate, use and create information effectively to achieve their personal, social, occupational and educational goals. It is a basic human right in a digital world and promotes social inclusion in all nations."
According to the American Library Association, "Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to 'recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.'"
Information literacy is the study or use of system, media especially computer and telecommunication used for storing, retrieving and sharing our skills and information.
Some of the Advantages and Disadvantages of Information literacy in education are:
Advantages:
- Communication: Instant messaging, emails, voice and video calls becomes quicker, cheaper and much efficient.
- Individualization of education: The students can search and learn about the topics they want and can progress in their individual life.
- Students can access the database information that enable them to quickly obtained information they need.
- Intensification of students in self work.
- It create more interactive experience.
- Modernization of classrooms.
- students can make their work clear and easy.
- It may create problems for the preparation and deliver of message.
- It may create distraction, inappropriate access, expensive to maintain during learning process.
- It may disconnect students from face to face relationship.
- Students can visit the unwanted sites or unrecommended sources.
- There are many sources which are not reliable and authorized so we have to know the reliable sources.
In the below diagram, you will notice that to be truly 'information literate' requires that you simultaneously develop:
- awareness of how you engage with the digital world.
- how you find meaning in the information you discover
- how to articulate what kind of information you require
- how to use information ethically
- understand the role you can play in the communication in your profession and
- how you evaluate information for credibility and authority.
